You know grad school has taken over your life when...

your initial instinct when you wake up at 4 in the morning is to check your computer to make sure your program is still running.

(Last night, my computer decided to restart itself due to a software update. A half a day lost!)

This, combined the fact that I'm an idiot, is how I lost a week's worth of work...

...there must be a way to turn that update "feature" off.

Huh... if your software doesn't need Internet access, why not just unplug the damn Internet connection, if you can't turn automatic updates off (which should be doable, on privacy concerns alone)?

P.S. Just curious... what possibly could you be doing that needs so many hours of runtime?

Yeah, the problem is that the program actually takes a few days to run in its entirety. So unplugging the internet isn't an option. But disabling should definitely be possible. I could also be doing it on the social sciences server but that tends to be quite a bit slower than my own computer.

The reason it takes so long to run is because I'm estimating models with both individual fixed effects and individual trends. With more than 4000 people, it takes a long long time.

Set up updates so that it will ask you first before updating!
